Today is all about how to start building your email list using totally free tools.
This post was written for people who are looking for a free way to get started with email lists that can easily be upgraded and scaled at a later time, when they CAN afford it. This is actually the second of two posts that walk you through the process.
The first step is to arrange a free email autoresponder (the place where your email list will live and where you will customize and send your emails from).
The second step (this post, keep reading) is to set up your website so that it will collect email addresses from your site visitors on autopilot.
Before we get started, I wanted to let you know that I’ve prepared a printable guide for you – it goes through all of the steps from both of the posts. I recommend you grab it and have it by your side as you arrange your free email autoresponder and set up your website opt-in process.
Lets get started.
After following the steps in the previous post, you now have a new email list that’s ready for you to start adding some email addresses to.
The next step is to add a way for people to sign up to your email list on your website.
We’re going to be using a free tool from SumoMe called a ‘welcome mat’ – it gets displayed to your new visitors as they arrive on your site.
To start setting it up, click on this button that says “Go to SumoMe”:
Type your website URL into the box and click on the big green button that says “TRY IT NOW”
I find it easiest to copy the code and paste it into my header HTML.
Click on the crown button up the top.
(The crown is where you’ll find your SumoMe apps, the globe is for your notifications, the question mark is for help and the X closes the menu)
We’re going to start by installing the welcome mat – which is simply a landing page style email collection tool – but you can install any of the email list building tools that you want.
To install your welcome mat, click on the crown then click on the green “Sumo Store” icon.
Click on ‘open’
Down the bottom it says “just continue with SumoMe Free” so we’re going to click on the blue button that says “Continue” and not any of the green “free trial” ones.
Customize your heading and add some subheading text
To edit the colors, click on the arrow and enter the code in the box, or select a color using your mouse.
Now, go to the behavior tab.
In my case, it’s a page that reminds them to confirm their email address, but you can send them anywhere. If you don’t have a custom thank you page yet, you can send them anywhere you like.
Don’t forget to click on the bright green ‘save’ button down the bottom
Next, go to the ‘display rules’ and add a ‘do not show’ rule for any page on your website that’s already a landing page for paid advertising.
Your first email list is set up, and your website is collecting email addresses and adding them to your list.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve prepared a printable guide for you – it goes through all of the steps from this post and also from the previous post. I recommend you have it by your side as you arrange your free email autoresponder and set your website up to build your email list.
